The Hungarian (Magyar) people migrated into the Carpathian region in 895 AD, and have stayed there ever since. Their kingdom was one of the biggest in medieval Europe until the Turkish conquest in the 1500's. After that the bits not under Turkish control mostly fell to the Austrian Hapsburgs.

A separate Hungarian state was reestablished after the First World War, but not including large areas that had (and still have) a Hungarian population. Hungary fought on the Axis side in the Second World War, mostly to try and get these territories back, but they were taken away again after the Nazi defeat. The occupying Soviet forces then organised a Communist republic.

Modern Hungary is a parliamentary republic, in which multiparty democracy was restored by a constitutional amendment on 23rd October 1989. Since 2004, Hungary is a member state of the European Union.
